Author and physician Gabor Mate said, “If you don’t allow your anger, you will always be working against it.” I appreciate that he is highlighting this truth.
As a chronic Anger Stuffer, I spent years “working against” my anger. One way to think about it is that "parts of me" were working REALLY hard to suppress my anger—my boundaries, my authentic voice, and my power.
It is essential to ask ourselves, “When I suppress an emotion like anger, what impact does this have on me? What are the consequences?”
For me, my body flared with a whole host of physical issues: lockjaw, tight shoulders, acid reflux, anxiety, and panic attacks. For many people, when we suppress our emotions, we start to experience depression or exhaustion.
What happens when you don’t allow your anger? And what are healthy outlets for your anger?
