The Two Main Kinds of Anger That No One is Talking About

There are two very different kinds of anger: Adult-Self Anger (which is anger as a primary emotion) and Young-Self Anger (which is anger as a secondary emotion).

This Adult Anger is the wise, intuitive, protective part of our anger. When we take action from this kind of anger (even though it may be intense or fierce), we are connected to ourselves and our hearts, and are more likely to create the change we want to see.

Whereas Young-Self Anger is more reactive, compulsive, and righteous. Often, what lies beneath this anger is something other than anger: fear, pain, vulnerability, grief, or trauma. This is why young anger is a secondary emotion.

When anger starts to arise for you, ask yourself, “Is this my wise adult anger or my reactive young anger?” How can you tell the difference?

In this video, I share a simple exercise to help you connect with the anger in your body and discover what’s underneath it.
